How Much Apple and Other US Tech Companies Pay in Taxes

Infographic: How Much U.S. Tech Companies Pay in Taxes | Statista
Source: Statista

As the chart above illustrates, Apple is far from alone among tech companies in trying to pay as little taxes as possible. Apple and Google and other large tech companies have been accused of avoiding U.S. taxes by stashing foreign earnings in countries with lower corporate tax rates. When asked about his company’s tax avoidance practices in an interview with “60 Minutes”, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook rebutted the allegations saying that Apple pays “every tax dollar it owes”. He also criticized the U.S. tax code for being outdated in the digital age and claimed that Apple pays more taxes than any other company. While possibly true in total terms, it definitely isn't in relation to the company's outlandish profits. In 2014, Apple paid $13.97 billion in income taxes, which is more than what IBM, Microsoft and Google paid combined. But Apple’s effective tax rate (the average rate at which pre-tax profits are taxed) in 2014 was 26.1%, 2.5 percentage points below the average tax rate paid by S&P 100 companies in 2014, as well as the statutory federal income tax rate of 35%.

Tech: Unlocked Mobile US Cellphones, Xiaomi Smartphones

All US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid and prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain parameters are met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to have all wireless carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015. Last year, the "Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act," was enacted which overruled a controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress. (read more at CNET)

The desperate struggle at the heart of the brutal Apple supply chain | Technology | The Guardian: ".... Though it doesn’t actually own any factories, Apple pours gigantic amounts of money - about $12.5bn in the past four quarters - into “plant, property and equipment”, the majority equipping its suppliers to make its products. (It is spending about $3bn - nearly as much as chipmaker Intel, though far less than Samsung Electronics, which has factories making screens, hard drives, and memory chips as well as phones, tablets and computers. Apple can make or break a supplier -The reality is that Apple, as the most valuable company on Earth by market capitalisation, now has the power to make or break a company through its supplier relationships (unlike Jobs’s pique, which had minimal effect on ATI). Being known as a supplier to it has definite value, one company - which is listed in Apple’s top 200 list - told the Guardian: “The value lies in the fact that Apple is recognised as having a high-quality build spec, so a relationship reflects well on that supplier’s products,” an executive said...."

Tech News: Apps Kill Your Battery; Internet Trends 2014 (slides)

KPCB Internet trends 2014 (Mary Meeker) slides from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers - internet users growth slows; increasing share to mobile devices

Mary Meeker: Mobile devices equal big data devices | Mobile technology - InfoWorld: "First, the basics: Overall, Internet usage continues to grow -- 2.6 billion users as of the end of 2013 -- but its growth rate has started to flatten, and much of the growth is in markets that Meeker describes as "more difficult to monetize," such as India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. Most of that Internet usage is shifting to mobile devices, with the lion's share of engagement taking place on smartphones rather than tablets despite the latter's booming sales. Even there, it's starting to level off: Smartphone subscriber growth is flattening, with the majority of growth taking place in what Meeker calls "underpenetrated markets" like China and Brazil...."

How the Internet Really Works, Level 3 Network, ISP Congestion

Level 3 network map
Level 3 Network Map

In the picture above, Level 3 shows the main connections of its backbone network. The orange lines are cable systems that Level 3 built and fully owns. And the yellow lines are owned by multiple carriers or leased. Comcast and other ISPs trying to shakedown carriers like Level 3 -- why is the US government allowing these predatory, monopolistic, unfair practices?

Observations of an Internet Middleman | Beyond Bandwidth: "...A port that is on average utilised at 90 percent will be saturated, dropping packets, for several hours a day. We have congested ports saturated to those levels with 12 of our 51 peers. Six of those 12 have a single congested port, and we are both (Level 3 and our peer) in the process of making upgrades – this is business as usual and happens occasionally as traffic swings around the Internet as customers change providers. That leaves the remaining six peers with congestion on almost all of the interconnect ports between us. Congestion that is permanent, has been in place for well over a year and where our peer [e.g., Comcast] refuses to augment capacity. They are deliberately harming the service they deliver to their paying customers. They are not allowing us to fulfil the requests their customers make for content. Five of those congested peers are in the United States and one is in Europe. There are none in any other part of the world. All six are large Broadband consumer networks with a dominant or exclusive market share in their local market. In countries or markets where consumers have multiple Broadband choices (like the UK) there are no congested peers...."
