How To Avoid Android Smartphone Malware: Only Install Apps From Google Play Store

Beware: New Android malware is ‘nearly impossible’ to remove. - The Washington Post: "... luckily, there is a pretty easy way to avoid them: Only install apps from Google's official Play Store." (emphasis added)

Here's the "money quote"--
"Malicious actors behind these families repackage and inject malicious code into thousands of popular applications found in Google Play, and then later publish them to third-party app stores," Lookout noted in a blog post about the malware. That means the victims here were people who went outside of Google's official channels to install the imposter apps."
Buyer beware!

CyanogenMod essentially takes the Android code and modifies it, adding different features and bringing it to other devices. What could a Microsoft-powered CyanogenMod mean for Google? How to Fix Bookmarks Manager in Google Chrome Browser

The Chrome browser bookmarks function manager currently rolling out (Chrome version 40+) is an "abomination" (see article below) but there is a fix (at least for now):
1. Go to chrome://flags/ in the browser window
2. Find "Enable Enhanced Bookmarks" and disable it (old bookmarks function will return after you close and relaunch chrome browser).

Chrome users attack new graphical bookmarks manager | Computerworld: "...  user feedback in a message posted to the Chrome support discussion forum. Although there were a few users who applauded the redesign there, most did not, labeling it "an abomination," "unmitigated disaster" and "child-like." Those who roasted the new manager asked Google to restore the old list view or at least offer it as an option. Those with large numbers of bookmarks were particularly frustrated with the change. "The new bookmark manager is unusable if you have more than a handful of bookmarks," said a user..."

Did the US Kick North Korea Off The Internet? (video)

Bloomberg’s Jordan Roberston discusses North Korea’s loss of access to internet networks.

Something is really not well at Google. How is it possible to trip up the amazing position Google had in the smartphone world one year ago into the abyss where it's not even capable of selling a single phone directly to the consumer today? If you want to know why Google's stock is down in 2014, vastly underperforming Apple and other companies, look no further than this fiasco. Source:
Smartphones: Apple Knows What It's Doing, Google Doesn't - Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) | Seeking Alpha: "Summary:  Every single smartphone on Google’s direct-to-consumer eCommerce site is listed as sold out, and in most cases have been for months. Other models (Google Play Edition) from Samsung and Sony have been discontinued altogether. How is it possible for the world’s smartphone market share leader to simply abdicate? This explains Google’s recent market share loss to Apple, and its resulting underperforming stock in 2014. Who is responsible for this fiasco at Google? New management is urgently needed...." China is Planning to Purge Foreign Technology and Replace With Homegrown Suppliers - Bloomberg: "“A key government motivation is to bring China up from low-end manufacturing to the high end,” said Kitty Fok, China managing director for IDC. National security provides China a powerful rallying cry, particularly within its sprawling state sector. China National Petroleum Corp., the country’s largest energy producer, announced Nov. 26 -- during China’s first Cybersecurity Week -- that it had replaced its Microsoft e-mail with the homegrown eYou program to improve security. “The technology gap is closing,” said Mota, who advises Cisco and HP, as well as Huawei and ZTE. “In China, they have the patience to figure it out.”"

Android E-Commerce And Market Numbers - Business Insider: "Android is exploding as a mobile commerce driver. Android's share of mobile commerce orders is up 26% year-over-year. Android devices now account for just over one-fifth of all mobile e-commerce orders in the US.  The fragmentation problem is extremely overblown, from all perspectives: screen size, operating system version, and device proliferation. Globally, 80% of Android devices are running the two latest available versions of the platform. In the U.S, it's over 90%. Android Lollipop will roll out beginning this month."

How Disastrous was Windows 8? One Clue: It Killed Windows 9

Don't go looking for Windows 9--it doesn't exist--Microsoft officially unveiled the name of its next of Windows on Tuesday, and for some reason Microsoft decided to skip "9" and go straight to 10--"Windows 10." read more at: Windows 10 is the official name for Microsoft's next version of Windows | The Verge. And unfortunately for Microsoft, Windows 8 did a lot more damage than just kill the idea of Windows 9, it alienated millions of loyal customers who have since moved on to Google (Android and Chrome OS) and Apple (iOS and OS X). Here's the hard truth for Microsoft: with the advent of the Cloud and the ubiquity of connectivity, there's decreasing need for a Windows PC--a good Chromebook [tip: always get 4GB RAM] costs less, is more secure, and can satisfy all needs of over 90% of all users (consumers and knowledge workers), and Chromebooks can now work offline.
