How Disastrous was Windows 8? One Clue: It Killed Windows 9

Don't go looking for Windows 9--it doesn't exist--Microsoft officially unveiled the name of its next of Windows on Tuesday, and for some reason Microsoft decided to skip "9" and go straight to 10--"Windows 10." read more at: Windows 10 is the official name for Microsoft's next version of Windows | The Verge. And unfortunately for Microsoft, Windows 8 did a lot more damage than just kill the idea of Windows 9, it alienated millions of loyal customers who have since moved on to Google (Android and Chrome OS) and Apple (iOS and OS X). Here's the hard truth for Microsoft: with the advent of the Cloud and the ubiquity of connectivity, there's decreasing need for a Windows PC--a good Chromebook [tip: always get 4GB RAM] costs less, is more secure, and can satisfy all needs of over 90% of all users (consumers and knowledge workers), and Chromebooks can now work offline.

Native Apps and App Stores Will Soon Be Dinosaurs

Steve Jobs was right -- he was just ahead of his time. With HTML5 and the modern mobile browser, native apps and app stores will soon look like dinosaurs, even worse than brick-and-mortar retail:

The Confusing World of Apps - WSJ.com: "Given the plethora of apps out there, it has become increasingly hard for smartphone users to spot the best ones. Apple's App Store and Google Play each have over a million to choose from. To make things worse, app searches aren't as intuitive as consumers might hope ..."

Audacity | Steve Jobs Looked Beyond Native Apps. And He Was Right.: " . . . The distinctions, as Jobs saw them, were that web apps would be secure, universally available, easy to update and required no dedicated software development kit (SDK). The debate was, and still is, that web app development was a better choice than native app development. While a few years ahead of the technologies of the time, Jobs correctly touted the browser as an important, if not the most important, application platform. Seven years later, huge advancements in browser technology and an incredible resurgence in JavaScript as a matured programming language have narrowed the gap between app development techniques...."

Heard on the Street: Alibaba's Magic Fades on SoftBank - WSJ.com: "SoftBank investors have more to keep in mind than just Alibaba's valuation. The company posted a 28% on-year decline in net profit for the three months ended in March, weighed down by costs from serial acquisitions and a telecom price war in Japan. And SoftBank still appears keen for its Sprint unit to make a bid for T-Mobile, despite regulator skepticism. The deal has strategic logic as it would help consolidate Sprint's position in the U.S., but it would also expand SoftBank's net debt, which already is at six times Ebitda, much higher than telecom peers."

Global Raids Target 'Blackshades' Hacking Ring - WSJ.com: "The Federal Bureau of Investigation and foreign police agencies have launched a series of raids around the world at the homes of people linked to a type of hacking software called Blackshades, according to posts on hacker forums and people familiar with the investigation. The software is what experts call a "rat''—remote access tool—that allows people to control computers from a distance..."

"Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform," the statement said...."

Apple Sued Over Vanishing Texts After IPhones Swapped Out - Bloomberg: "A former iPhone user sued Apple Inc. (AAPL) claiming the company’s messaging system interfered with delivery of texts after she switched to an Android-based smartphone. (005930) phone running on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, Adrienne Moore said in the complaint filed yesterday in San Jose, California. People who replace their Apple devices with non-Apple wireless phones and tablets are “penalized and unable to obtain the full benefits of their wireless-service contracts,” according to the complaint...."

BlackBerry Director Nordberg to Step Down as Board Shrinks to 6 - Bloomberg: "BlackBerry Ltd. said director Bert Nordberg won’t stand for re-election just a year after he was named, leaving the smartphone maker with six board members. It didn’t say why he won’t seek to remain on the board after being appointed last year...."

Windows Phone web usage tops BlackBerry in North America but looks stagnant — Tech News and Analysis: "While Chitika’s graph shows BlackBerry’s decline, more interesting to me is the lack of growth for Windows Phone usage. It suggests that Microsoft is still having a hard time finding a foothold for its handsets in the U.S. and Canada. Chitika’s report notes that iOS and Android are still doing well, accounting for 53.1 and 44.5 percent of North American smartphone web traffic, respectively."

Samsung hopes to make FaceTime a headache for Apple | The Verge: "After weeks of playing defense against five Apple patents, Samsung this week went after Apple with two of its own patents: one it says is infringed when people make FaceTime calls, and another that covers the photo gallery feature found on iPhones, iPads, and some iPods. In the case of the video patent, Samsung says it's being infringed every time iOS users begin a FaceTime call over cellular networks, or if they send video messages to one another through the Mail and messaging app...."

David Einhorn Just Cried Bubble And Let Slip The Shorts Of War | TechCrunch: "David Einhorn, a hedge fund manager worth north of a billion dollars, isn’t bullish on technology stocks. In a letter to his investors sent today, Einhorn described the current market environment as the “second tech bubble in 15 years.” Calling today an “echo of the previous tech bubble,” Einhorn notes that there are currently “fewer large capitalization stocks and much less public enthusiasm” this time around. This means that the current bubble, such as it is, is smaller, and when it does deflate — how rapidly we’ll have to see — there will be less carnage — blood, red ink, or otherwise...."

Why Android is Winning the Smartphone Market Over iPhone

Steve Jobs knew Apple was going to be beaten by Google's Android smartphone OS -- he saw it coming because he had seen this before when Microsoft took the personal computer market away from Apple --

"For example, if ridiculously long battery life is what you crave, there's the Motorola Droid Maxx. Looking for an excellent unlocked bargain? Well then, consider the Moto G, Moto X, or Nexus 5.
Additionally, phablet lovers have the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and LG G Pro 2 to tickle their fancy, while design aficionados will certainly enjoy the oohs and aahs they'll receive from the lovely HTC One M8. There's simply no contest here, since the singular iPhone can't hope to stand against a legion of very impressive (or more impressive, I'll wager) handsets from numerous companies." (source infra)

Why I’m glad I never abandoned Android for an iPhone - CNET: "....The future belongs to Android not Apple. Google is making inroads into virtually every area of modern life where technology plays a significant role, and I think that bodes well for Android's future. If we're soon to enter a brave new world of self-driving cars and smart home appliances, not to mention gadgets we will strap to our bodies that will track our movements, chances are good Android will be there in force...."

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra: True world phones in 2 years, Android all the way - CNET: "...."In a year or two, we will have completely shifted towards building inherently global products. Whenever we think about a new feature, we try to think about it from a Chinese perspective and a global perspective." The numbers show how precipitously Xiaomi is growing. The 4-year-old company is making phones as fast as it can sell them, and it's selling a lot of phones. In 2012, the company sold 7.2 million smartphones. In 2013, Xiaomi doubled that number, selling 18.7 million handsets...."

Facebook Fraud? (video)

Facebook Fraud
"Evidence Facebook's revenue is based on fake likes.

Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis: Facebook Fraud - How Much of Facebook's Ad Revenue is Legitimate?: " . . . . From my experience, Google is very meticulous about weeding out fraud. If you pay money to generate clicks or impressions on your site, Google will drop you from its ad program. If the above video is even in the ballpark, there are serious issues at Facebook. In general there are serious problems if you pay someone to "like" you or drive traffic to you. Addendum: Just moments after I made the above post,  I received an email from Lenny Teytelman regarding his company's experiences with fake "likes": What do Facebook “likes” of companies mean? The moral of this story is don't pay for "likes", don't pay to have someone drive traffic to your site either."

Now running on a Chromebook near you: Windows | Business Tech - CNET News: " . . . Up until now, Chrome OS has been unable to run anything besides Web sites and the HTML5-based Chrome Web Apps. That's left many businesses in the lurch, perhaps attracted to Chromebook's affordability, centralized management console, and lower security risks but unwilling to lose access to core business applications. Combine those positives with Microsoft's Windows 8 stumbles and the impending end-of-life of the decade-old Windows XP, and Google hopes that it has an opening to attract businesses looking for a new approach to workplace computers. Businesses can purchase access to VMWare's Horizon Desktop-as-a-Service to run on Chrome OS. At first, it'll be available only as an on-site service, although a Chrome Web Store app is in the works...."

Firefox gives up on Apple iOS

Apple prevents its users from choosing the default browser--

Mozilla says no plans to return to iOS | SXSW - CNET News: " . . . The nonprofit Mozilla, which pulled Mozilla Firefox Home from Apple's App Store in September 2012, is not currently building a version of its Firefox browser for iOS, nor does the company plan to, said Sullivan, speaking on a mobile browser wars panel at South by Southwest Interactive moderated by CNET Senior Reporter Seth Rosenblatt. . . .  Apple, meanwhile, commands more than 55 percent of the mobile browser market with Safari. Of course, Apple's environment isn't all that welcoming a place for third-party browsers. The company prevents its users from making any other application the default browser, which makes moving beyond Safari for all of one's browsing needs nearly impossible. . . . Sullivan and Opera Software's Mike Taylor, also on the panel, shared the same viewpoint. They all argued that giving consumers browser choice was essential to making browsers, and the Web in general, great. And, Sullivan argued, Apple's closed environment means users suffer. . . "

Crime Software: Still Awaiting a Verdict | MIT Technology Review: "It’s not hard to imagine that software might do better than humans, especially over longer timescales. But let’s face it—police brass want their initiatives to succeed. And if you give an officer a map with red boxes on it—most of them naturally in sketchier areas—and order him to go there, it’s not unreasonable to think he’ll spend more time there than he otherwise might. (Police officers are people, too.) And officers report feeling a heightened state of awareness when in these zones. That psychological effect surely makes them do their jobs better, regardless of prediction accuracy. Finally, if you let software spit out the patrol orders—and abolish any planning meetings at the precinct house—cops will be on the road for that much more time. "

Chinese Physicists Measure Speed of "Spooky Action At a Distance" | MIT Technology Review: " . . . One of the strangest concepts in quantum mechanics is the notion of entanglement. This is the idea that two quantum particles can be so deeply linked that they share the same existence. When that happens, a measurement on one immediately influences the other, regardless of the distance between them. This “spooky action at a distance”, as Einstein called it, has puzzled and fascinated physicists since it was first discussed in the 1930s. Einstein initially used it as evidence of the failure of quantum mechanics since this instantaneous action clearly seemed to violate relativity. Later, physicists realised there was no conflict because the “spooky action” cannot be used to send information faster than the speed of light. However, important questions remain about the nature of entanglement and spooky action. “If the spooky action does exist, what is its speed?” ask Juan Yin and pals at the University of Science and Technology of China in Shanghai.  Today, they reveal the answer. They say spooky action travels at least four orders of magnitude faster than light. . . ."
