Chromecast sales equal Roku; Tablet Sales Decline

Roku and Chromecast go head-to-head in streaming race, Apple TV falling behind — Tech News and Analysis"Google sold 3.8 million Chromecast streaming sticks last year, which makes the device about as popular as Roku’s streaming devices. Roku and Chromecast were the two most successful streaming devices sold in the U.S. in 2013, according to new data from Parks Associates, which puts Apple TV on third place. Google sold an estimated 3.8 million Chromecast streaming sticks after introducing the product in mid-2013, according to Parks, which also estimates that this about equals Roku’s sales throughout 2013. Apple is trailing, and sold just a bit more than two million devices in the U.S. last year, according to data shared by Parks...."

Meanwhile Tablet sales decline, ramifications for Apple iPad and Microsoft Surface strategies?
Tablet Shipments Decline For the First Time, NPD Says - Digits - WSJ: "... Global shipments of tablet computers, after years of robust growth, declined for the first time in the first quarter of this year, according to NPD DisplaySearch. The research firm also lowered its tablet shipment forecast for 2014. The decline is in part because of weakening demand for smaller tablets – those between 7 inches and 7.9 inches – which accounted for 58% of global tablet shipments last year. In China and other emerging markets, competition from smartphones with screens larger than 5.5 inches is hurting demand for those tablets, NPD said...."

Amazon Fire TV misses the mark, as do other media boxes

Amazon Fire TV misses the same marks as Ouya, other media boxes | Ars Technica: "At $99, Amazon's first entry into this space is pretty disappointing, even just considering the product at hand. When we add up the missed opportunities—like the possibility for video subscription service, some kind of privileges for Prime customers, a free gaming controller to play up the gaming angle, or HDMI passthrough—it's clear Amazon's shot is pretty wide of the mark. Amazon's interest in media is clearly large and growing, and its ability to privilege its own box on its site the way it privileges Amazon content on the box itself virtually guarantees sales. But in the media device landscape, the Fire TV not only fails to achieve its goals, it falls short of its competitors." (read more at link above)

Here’s Why the Comcast–Time Warner Merger Is Bad | MIT Technology Review: "Among the many threats to the future of Internet access in the United States, nothing tops Comcast’s proposed $45 billion acquisition of Time Warner Cable. The combined company would be in a position to provide high-capacity data services to almost two-thirds of American households and to tightly control everything flowing over its pipe. It could extract unconstrained fees for access to its subscribers or for entry to its network. And it would have the ability to charge different fees for different services, and to protect the success of its affiliated streaming-video assets like Streampix (and other uses of its network requiring high-capacity data) at the expense of others, thereby undermining the ideals of net neutrality...."

Alibaba to acquire AutoNavi in $1.5 billion deal | ZDNet"Alibaba likely has specific intentions on how it will use AutoNavi's mobile-map capabilities. Licenses that allow the mapping of Chinese roads are scant, and AutoNavi holds the keys to one of the few. Alibaba could fold that map muscle into its own platform, giving would-be shoppers directions to nearby stores and sending them mobile ads once they're inside. China's mushrooming online market has reached 618 million users, 80 percent of which are mobile."

Windows Phone sales stall again

Analysis: Microsoft missed the smartphone revolution, and buying Nokia compounded its mistakes -- Windows phones (including Nokia), will never make Microsoft much, if any, real money, and will only attain a small market share. Android is the OS for smartphones and tablets globally, and Microsoft should have focused its efforts on a cross-platform Internet Explorer browser that would run on iOS, Android, and Windows devices. Expect the new Microsoft CEO to look for a spin-off of Windows and Nokia from an increasingly enterprise and cloud-centric Microsoft within 3 years.

Windows Phone sales stall again -- can anything save it? | Computerworld Blogs: "The latest figures show that sales of Windows Phones have stalled, mired at 4% in the U.S., and 1% in China. Is there any way for Microsoft's smartphone operating system to become a success? The most recent sales figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech for the three months ending in December 2013 hold no good news for Windows Phone. In Europe, it's maintaining around a steady 10% market share, which it's had for months, but not increasing any. In the world's two largest smartphone markets, it's made no headway at all -- 4.3% in the U.S., and 1.1% in China. That's about where it's been for months. Even compared to a year ago, it hasn't made much headway. A year ago it has 2.4% market share in the U.S., and 0.9% market share in China. As for the other big growth market, South America, it's done dismally there as well. Its market share has dropped in the last year, from 6.8% to 4.9%...."

Microsoft backs off on Metro - Computerworld: "....As for the tablet market, it's Android and iOS all the way. I've been hearing from some friends of Microsoft that they're sure that Lenovo buying Motorola means good things ahead for Windows on smartphones and tablets. Really? They must be using really good drugs to come to that conclusion...."

Lenovo CEO on Apple, Samsung: 'Our mission is to surpass them' - Fortune Tech"We will fully leverage the Motorola brand in the U.S. and Latin America, just like we leveraged the ThinkPad brand in the PC space. Motorola will be our smartphone product .... Regarding the product portfolio, we don't want to be playing just in the entry level or to be viewed as a cheaper brand. We want to compete in the full range of the product line, including the premium segment. Both Lenovo and Motorola have the DNA of innovation. I believe we can develop a very innovative or very premium product. Meanwhile, we should be more competitive in the entry level given that Lenovo has global scale in our manufacturing capabilities and operational efficiency."

By ditching Motorola, Google frees Android from distractions | Internet & Media - CNET News".... Lenovo is happy because it gets a big boost to its fledgling smartphone business in regions where it doesn't yet have a toehold. Samsung is happy because it feels like it can deal with Google more equitably. But by far, Google is the happiest, coming out of the Motorola deal with a beefed-up Android, investor credibility, and proof that it can play the patent long game."

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols: The Windows killer: Chromebook - Computerworld: "The Windows killer: Chromebook - I've been a believer in Chromebooks for a long time. Now, everyone else is getting the religion. NPD, a retail market analysis company, reports that sales of Chromebooks exploded from zilch in 2012 to more than 20% of the U.S. PC market in 2013. This helped push overall notebook PC growth up by 28.9%. Meanwhile, Windows notebooks sales were as flat as a pancake, and Mac sales shrank by 7%. At the same time, overall PC sales declined in 2013 by a record 10.1%...."

How to slash your wireless bill just by whispering ‘T-Mobile’ in AT&T’s ear --
AT&T Bill Discount: How T-Mobile could help get you cheaper AT&T plans | BGR: "Can you negotiate the cost of cell phone service just like pay TV and Internet service? Thanks to pressure from T-Mobile, the answer might be yes . . . ."

Samsung's strategy is failing: "...Samsung needs more than just marketing hype. Consumers have caught on that many of the flashier features in Samsung's products are just that - flash. Its products now need substance that make it more than just another high-end Android phone in a sea of high-end Android phones."

One-Ring Phone Scam on the Rise - BBB News Center: "Consumers around the country report an increasing number of what is known as the "One-Ring Phone Scam." Perpetrators of this scam program their computers to blast out thousands of calls to random cell phone numbers, ring once, and then disconnect. This scam relies on consumers calling back missed calls, which then connect them to a paid international adult entertainment service, 'chat' line, or other premium service located outside the country."

Microsoft Surface 2 review, It's not good

What Microsoft Gets Fundamentally Wrong About Making Tablets -- Read the full review at the link below (excerpt follows):

Surface 2 review: It needs apps, better software.: " . . . The Surface isn't good for gaming. It isn't good for entertainment. Maybe it's good for doing work, but personally, I don't need to do work on a tablet, and I'm not convinced the majority of people need to do work on a tablet. The Surface doesn't even have Candy Crush, which is the most popular game on the planet right now. It doesn't have Scrabble. Those are the two games I play most on an iPad. They're also the games my Mom and wife play. They're popular with a lot of people. . . ."
