Tech: Unlocked Mobile US Cellphones, Xiaomi Smartphones
All US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid and prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain parameters are met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to have all wireless carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015. Last year, the "Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act," was enacted which overruled a controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress. (read more at CNET)

Tech News: Bit Rot, Vint Cerf, Digital Memory
What is 'bit rot' and is Vint Cerf right to be worried? | Technology | The Guardian: "...What is ‘bit rot’? What Cerf coined as “bit rot” is a process by which the mechanisms for accessing a digital file are lost, rending that file useless junk. A big part of the problem is the use of closed file formats that require specific software to read those files. If, for instance, you have memoirs written over the last decade stored in a Microsoft Office .doc file from Word or a similar program, that file is easily readable today with a multitude of programs - not all of them made by Microsoft. But the .doc file is a proprietary file format made and licensed by Microsoft. Facebook Twitter Pinterest In 1985, not even Bill Gates knew that computers would not feature 5.25 inch floppy disk drives forever. Photograph: Deborah Feingold/Deborah Feingold/Corbis Should Microsoft choose to stop supporting it and prevented other software from using the format, all those documents would be unreadable once the last version of the old software that could read them no longer runs on newer computers...." These would serve as central points to share information on particular threats and in specific regions. The order also envisions the development of voluntary standards to which these organizations, which could be private companies or community organizations, would comply. Tech News Week Review: Anthem Hack, Ransomware, Mobile Payments, Xiaomi, Micromax
Chinese State-Sponsored Hackers Suspected in Anthem Attack - Bloomberg Business: "(Bloomberg) -- Investigators of Anthem Inc.’s data breach are pursuing evidence that points to Chinese state-sponsored hackers who are stealing personal information from health-care companies for purposes other than pure profit, according to three people familiar with the probe. The breach, which exposed Social Security numbers and other sensitive details of 80 million customers, is one of the biggest thefts of medical-related customer data in U.S. history. China has said in the past that it doesn’t conduct espionage through hacking. The attack appears to follow a pattern of thefts of medical data by foreigners seeking a pathway into the personal lives and computers of a select group -- defense contractors, government workers and others, according to a U.S. government official familiar with a more than year-long investigation into the evidence of a broader campaign...."
How Ransomware Works, and Why You Should Be Afraid | MIT Technology Review: ".... It is hard for malware to spread on mobile devices, because most people download software only from official app stores. Simplocker is typically spread through downloads of apps from pornography websites. The best way to keep ransomware off your computer, experts say, is to follow best practices by keeping software updated, using antivirus and other security software, and being careful about where you click and what you install. Backing up data on a separate hard drive or using a cloud service could save you from being held for ransom if an infection does occur. “Ransomware could be just a minor nuisance if people could just restore the data from the backup,” says Lipovsky. However, like other security researchers, he is resigned to discovering many more cases of ransomware in coming months. “Even though the advice is quite simple, lots of people don’t listen to it.”

How to Fix Bookmarks Manager in Google Chrome Browser
The Chrome browser bookmarks function manager currently rolling out (Chrome version 40+) is an "abomination" (see article below) but there is a fix (at least for now):
1. Go to chrome://flags/ in the browser window
2. Find "Enable Enhanced Bookmarks" and disable it (old bookmarks function will return after you close and relaunch chrome browser).
Chrome users attack new graphical bookmarks manager | Computerworld: "... user feedback in a message posted to the Chrome support discussion forum. Although there were a few users who applauded the redesign there, most did not, labeling it "an abomination," "unmitigated disaster" and "child-like." Those who roasted the new manager asked Google to restore the old list view or at least offer it as an option. Those with large numbers of bookmarks were particularly frustrated with the change. "The new bookmark manager is unusable if you have more than a handful of bookmarks," said a user..."

China Warns Microsoft Against Obstructing Probe - WSJ: "Chinese regulators on Monday publicly warned Microsoft Corp. against obstructing an antitrust investigation into the firm, in the latest sign that Beijing has turned frosty on the U.S. software maker. China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce said in a statement that Microsoft should avoid "interfering in or obstructing" the probe. The regulator also said it had questioned Microsoft Deputy General Counsel Mary Snapp as part of the investigation. Why Billionaires Salivate Over the U.S. Wireless Market - Bloomberg: "... New Report on the Costs of NSA Surveillance | Just Security: "...In its report, the Open Technology Institute finds that the costs of NSA surveillance are indeed quite high. For example, it shows that since the initial Snowden revelations U.S. businesses have reported declining sales abroad because of growing perceptions that U.S. firms are unable to keep customer data secure. Honeymoon Period Over For Marissa Mayer, Yahoo (video)
(Allow video to load after clicking play or go to link here)
Yahoo will return at least half of the cash it reaps from Alibaba's IPO to investors, providing solace to shareholders who’ve hung on as CEO Marissa Mayer struggles to revive sales. Bloomberg's Paul Sweeney and Cory Johnson have more on "Bloomberg West." (Source: Bloomberg July 15)
Honeymoon Period Over For Marissa Mayer - Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) | Seeking Alpha: "Yahoo's CEO, Ms. Marissa Mayer, recently completed her two year anniversary. The stock has recovered since she took the reins, but it is still a far cry from Yahoo's golden days. Search and display revenues are not picking up as expected and their stock is trading at $35.61 with a market capitalization of $36 billion. It touched a 52-week high of $41.72 in April this year. The problem with Marissa's approach thus far is that it is heavy on hype, and light on fundamentals. I am still scratching my head trying to figure out what on earth is her monetization plan for all the assets she has bought. The market, in the next few quarters, will do the same. Currently, the only real case for investing in Yahoo is to gain access to the Alibaba upside."
