Tech: Unlocked Mobile US Cellphones, Xiaomi Smartphones

All US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid and prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain parameters are met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to have all wireless carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015. Last year, the "Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act," was enacted which overruled a controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress. (read more at CNET)

Did the US Kick North Korea Off The Internet? (video)

Bloomberg’s Jordan Roberston discusses North Korea’s loss of access to internet networks.

Something is really not well at Google. How is it possible to trip up the amazing position Google had in the smartphone world one year ago into the abyss where it's not even capable of selling a single phone directly to the consumer today? If you want to know why Google's stock is down in 2014, vastly underperforming Apple and other companies, look no further than this fiasco. Source:
Smartphones: Apple Knows What It's Doing, Google Doesn't - Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) | Seeking Alpha: "Summary:  Every single smartphone on Google’s direct-to-consumer eCommerce site is listed as sold out, and in most cases have been for months. Other models (Google Play Edition) from Samsung and Sony have been discontinued altogether. How is it possible for the world’s smartphone market share leader to simply abdicate? This explains Google’s recent market share loss to Apple, and its resulting underperforming stock in 2014. Who is responsible for this fiasco at Google? New management is urgently needed...." China is Planning to Purge Foreign Technology and Replace With Homegrown Suppliers - Bloomberg: "“A key government motivation is to bring China up from low-end manufacturing to the high end,” said Kitty Fok, China managing director for IDC. National security provides China a powerful rallying cry, particularly within its sprawling state sector. China National Petroleum Corp., the country’s largest energy producer, announced Nov. 26 -- during China’s first Cybersecurity Week -- that it had replaced its Microsoft e-mail with the homegrown eYou program to improve security. “The technology gap is closing,” said Mota, who advises Cisco and HP, as well as Huawei and ZTE. “In China, they have the patience to figure it out.”"

Android E-Commerce And Market Numbers - Business Insider: "Android is exploding as a mobile commerce driver. Android's share of mobile commerce orders is up 26% year-over-year. Android devices now account for just over one-fifth of all mobile e-commerce orders in the US.  The fragmentation problem is extremely overblown, from all perspectives: screen size, operating system version, and device proliferation. Globally, 80% of Android devices are running the two latest available versions of the platform. In the U.S, it's over 90%. Android Lollipop will roll out beginning this month."

Smartphones, Ultra Cheap, Ultra Chic

Infographic: Apple and Samsung Lose Ground to Chinese Vendors | Statista

source: Statista

Ultra Cheap Mobile Phones Will Upset The Industry Apple Cart - Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) | Seeking Alpha: "...The pressure from lower priced phones is having its effect already. IDC reports that while over 300 million smartphones were sold in Q2, a 25% rise over 2013, both Apple and Samsung lost market share in the period. Worse for both in some respects, Bloomberg reported that China Mobile has slashed subsidies for higher priced devices. Samsung had already seen its profits suffer a decline as its smartphone shipments stuttered and average selling prices fell in the second quarter causing a 10% drop in revenues and a profit drop. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to calculate what happens to Apple profits if its volumes drop 10% and its prices drop 10% in parallel..."

It's solid crypto, but more than that, it makes sense in a way that few programs of its kind do. Like a padlock, Minilock makes it obvious what's locked and what's unlocked. You'll always know who can open what, and you'll never wonder if you've locked it wrong. In the confounding world of modern cryptography, that's pretty impressive...."
