The Apple Mac, Surprising Growth Driver, Surpassing iPad

Editor's Note: With Windows 8, Microsoft damaged its Windows brand and consumer confidence in Microsoft products and Windows PCs--giving increasing opportunity on the high-end to Apple and on the low-end to Google's Chrome OS computers--

Apple’s Surprising Growth Driver: the Mac - WSJ - WSJ: "During a quarter marked by frenzied demand for the latest iPhones, Apple Inc. logged its biggest sales gains with a product heading into middle-age: the Mac. On the 30th anniversary of the first Macintosh, a 21% jump in unit sales helped Apple’s computer line leapfrog the sagging iPad to become the company’s second biggest-selling product line in revenue terms, just behind the iPhone. The Mac line generated revenue of $6.625 billion in the quarter, more than iPad revenue of $5.316 billion. Demand for Macs rose amid falling sales of Windows PCs, giving Apple more than 6% of the global PC market, according to the research firm IDC. That percentage is Apple’s highest market share since 1995, when Microsoft Corp. established its dominance over the computer market with Windows 95. The Mac gained market share in 33 of the last 34 quarters, lifting its share from 2.1% in 2006, according to IDC...."

Google Wants 90% Of Office Users

More on the Google move to capture Office users--a task made easier with the disastrous Windows 8--

Google Wants To Grab 90% Of Office Users From Microsoft - Forbes: "In 2012, though, Google made several improvements to ramp up its enterprise offerings. In addition to its Compute Engine, which competes directly with Microsoft Azure, Google also introduced Drive, which enables Google App users to store almost any type of document “in the cloud”. Google also recently began charging companies to use Google Apps. With these improvements, Singh now believes that Google can dominate the enterprise market – and effectively steal Office users away from Microsoft. He says, “We know the gaps between our features and theirs. We’re improving them week by week. We’re going to get to the 90 percent.”"

Google Apps Moving Onto Microsoft’s Turf

More and more are going Google--

Google Apps Moving Onto Microsoft’s Business Turf - NYTimes.com: ". . . . In a recent report, Gartner, the information technology research company, called Google “the only strong competitor” to Microsoft in cloud-based business productivity software, though it warned that “enterprise concerns may not be of paramount importance to the search giant.” Google is tight-lipped about how many people use Google Apps, saying only that in June more than five million businesses were using it, up from four million in late 2011. Almost all these companies are tiny, but in early December Google announced that even companies with fewer than 10 employees, which used to get Google Apps free, would have to pay. Google’s revenue from Apps, according to a former executive who asked not to be named in order to maintain good relations with Google, amounted to perhaps $1 billion of the $37.9 billion Google earned in 2011. Shaw Industries, a carpet maker in Dalton, Ga., with about 30,000 employees, switched to Google Apps this year for communication tools like e-mail and videoconferencing. Jim Nielsen, the company’s manager of enterprise technology, calculated that using Google instead of similar Microsoft products would cost, over seven years, about one-thirteenth Microsoft’s price. . . ."
